It’s that time of year again, folks. Friday is the Rainbow Radiothon on WDOK 102.1 benefiting the child life department at the hospital. It looks like they’re going back to the old format of using the stories set to music.  This was how they did it for many years and it was enormously successful (because, as anyone with any fundraising experience knows, making people cry is the best way to get them to open their wallets). Then for the past two years, they used parent interviews with no song attached.  We participated in one of those as well and had our story used in 2010, but, honestly, it was pretty boring.

Now we’re back to our recording from many many years ago, long before the idea of relapse had entered our minds or our lives. Ordinary Miracle by Sarah McLachlan, as heard here, could not have been a more perfect match for us.

It’s sort of funny to hear the story now, with our confidence on full display (“Austin’s story ended happily…blah blah blah”). We clearly had no idea of all that lay ahead. Plus they cut and paste so many parts of the interview together that events that happened six days apart sound like they were mere hours later in the same day.

But it is truly beautiful and spot-on in its message. I can only offer my advance apologies to the preschool moms with mascara issues.

So, here it is: my sweet boy with that two-year old face covered in Fudgsicle.

“It seems so exceptional . . . that things just work out after all. . .” Exceptional indeed. We are living an ordinary miracle every day.

Just wanted to let you all know that the Rainbow Radiothon of the Children’s Miracle Network will be on air tomorrow and Friday on 102.1 WDOK, from 6 am to 7pm. We recorded a new miracle story for Austin about a month ago since this is a different radio station than the one that did his first story (and since his story has completely changed in the course of two years).

Wow, I just re-listened to that original story and it really is powerful (except for all the hoops you have to jump through to listen to it — I will try post a more direct link soon). And they could not have picked a better song. I hope I like this new one as much — I won’t hear it until the rest of the world does,  which always makes me a little nervous. It’s extremely hard to take this three-year-long saga and break it down from a one-hour interview to a three-minute piece, while maintaining any sense of accuracy. That’s one of the reasons I was so impressed with the recent Fox 8 News clip — because they so perfectly captured Austin and his journey in just a few short minutes.

There’s nothing on the WDOK website yet but they did ask for a bunch of photos so they could run slide shows during the songs, so definitely check in over the next few days.  Austin and I will head down to the hospital tomorrow for his afternoon of tests and appointments and will stop by the live studio for an interview, probably between noon and 1.

Should make the day a little more pleasant….

Totally last minute but the Rainbow Radiothon is running on 102.1 (www.wdok.com) today and tomorrow. Austin was one of the featured stories of the Children’s Miracle Network last year so I’m assuming they’ll rerun his story again, although it’s on a new station this year and it seems the format is a little different, so I’m not positive.

Here it is, our little “ordinary miracle.”
